For ages 3-5, browse our Mini Rider category; for ages 6-10, our Young Rider category; for teens, our Teen Rider Quads category.

Petrol quad: why choose it over electric?

A petrol kids quad offers unlimited range (as long as the tank is full) and an authentic engine sound, for a riding experience closer to real motocross. It's the preferred choice for families already involved in off-road riding who ride regularly on circuit or private land. For a quieter, lower-maintenance alternative, browse our electric kids quad range.

Safety: the essentials

Full-face helmet, gloves, high boots, and body protection are essential for any riding, even in kids' models. Constant adult supervision is required. Browse our kids helmets.

2-stroke or 4-stroke: which engine for a kids petrol quad?

2-stroke engines (2T) are lighter and offer punchier acceleration — a common choice for first quads (ages 3-5), but they require a precisely mixed petrol-oil blend. 4-stroke engines (4T) are quieter, cheaper to run (petrol only, no mixing), and more durable — recommended from age 8-9 for simpler maintenance and smoother riding.

What displacement by child's age?

  • 49cc — ages 3-5: lightweight, easy to handle, very limited speed.
  • 70-110cc — ages 6-8: moderate power to build confidence.
  • 125cc — ages 9-12: increased performance, semi-automatic clutch.
  • 150cc — teens: reserved for experienced riders who already have good control.

Wheel size and seat height: guidelines by age

Wheel size (6" to 8") and seat height (roughly 40 to 55 cm) should match the child's build, not just their age. The deciding factor remains the same: the child must be able to comfortably place their feet on the ground while seated. A seat that's too high makes controlling the quad harder, especially when stopping and starting.

Mechanical or hydraulic brakes?

Mechanical disc brakes are simpler, cheaper to maintain, and sufficient for young or beginner riders. Hydraulic disc brakes offer stronger braking power and greater durability — recommended for more powerful quads (125-150cc) intended for experienced riders.

Automatic or semi-automatic clutch?

For beginners, an automatic clutch greatly simplifies handling: no gear management, lower risk of stalling. From age 9-10, a semi-automatic clutch (like on the Cooba RG-7 PRM 125cc) allows a smooth transition to more technical riding, without the difficulty of a full manual clutch.

Maintaining a kids petrol quad

Regular maintenance includes: oil changes (10W-40 for 4-stroke, precisely mixed 2-stroke fuel for 2-stroke engines), air filter cleaning or replacement, spark plug checks, chain tension, and tyre pressure checks. All common parts are available in our parts section.
