This category brings together scooters with a seat and a flat floor, from the electric scooter to the 125cc. Three things guide the choice: the licence, your trips and the motor. The subcategories electric scooter, 50cc scooter and 125cc scooter present each family.

Electric, 50cc or 125cc: how to choose?

The 50cc scooter is limited to 45 km/h: it is the scooter for the city and short trips, ridden with an AM licence. The 125cc scooter goes faster, keeps up better on the outskirts and needs an A1 licence or, depending on the country, a B licence with training. The electric scooter uses no petrol or oil: it comes as a 50cc or 125cc equivalent depending on its power, and suits anyone who parks near a socket each night.

Which licence for which scooter?

A scooter limited to 45 km/h, a 50cc petrol model or an electric one of 4 kW at most, falls under the AM licence. A 125cc falls under the A1 licence: 125 cm³ at most, 11 kW at most and a power-to-weight ratio of 0.1 kW/kg at most. The minimum age and the conditions of access (training, how long you have held a B licence) are set by each country: check yours before you choose.

Before you buy: road approval, insurance and gear

A scooter ridden on the road must be approved for road use: check this on the product page. Insurance is compulsory, and so is an approved helmet. Plan the gear before the first ride: helmet, gloves, clothing and protection, in the equipment category.

1. Is an electric scooter the same as an electric kick scooter?
No. Here, a scooter is a two-wheeler with a seat and a flat floor, approved for the road like a moped or a light motorcycle. The electric kick scooter, which you ride standing up, falls under different rules.
2. What is the difference between a 50cc and a 125cc scooter?
The 50cc is limited to 45 km/h and is ridden with an AM licence. The 125cc goes faster and needs an A1 licence or, depending on the country, a B licence with training. The 125cc suits trips on the outskirts better, while the 50cc remains the choice for short trips in town.
3. Can I ride a scooter with a car licence?
It depends on the country. In several countries the B licence covers the 50cc; for a 125cc, extra training or a certain length of time holding the B licence is often required. Check with the authority in your country before buying.
