125cc scooter: A1 licence, town and suburbs

The 125cc scooter is the next step after the 50cc for longer trips: it goes faster, pulls better and moves easily from town to the suburbs. It is ridden with an A1 licence or, depending on the country, a B licence with training.

Which trips suit a 125cc?

The 125cc is for riders who commute every day through town and the suburbs, or who take longer rides. It keeps up with traffic better than a 50cc scooter, and seat comfort, wheel size and storage matter more over time. The electric scooter as a 125cc equivalent is the option without petrol.

A1 licence: the limits to know

The A1 category covers motorcycles and scooters of 125 cm³ at most, 11 kW at most and 0.1 kW/kg at most. A road-approved 125cc scooter respects these limits. The minimum age (16 in the European directive) and access with a B licence after training depend on the country. Plan the gear before the first ride: helmet, gloves, clothing and protection.

1. Which licence do I need for a 125cc scooter?
The A1 licence or, in several countries, the B licence with training or a certain length of time held. Check with the authority in your country.
2. What is the difference between a 50cc and a 125cc?
The 50cc is limited to 45 km/h (AM licence). The 125cc goes faster, needs an A1 licence and suits longer trips.
3. What is the maximum power for the A1 licence?
11 kW at most, with 125 cm³ at most and a power-to-weight ratio of 0.1 kW/kg at most.
