The 2026 Yamaha YZ250F is a 250cc 4-stroke motocross bike, campaigned in FIM MX2 Grand Prix by Yamaha factory riders. This 70th Anniversary edition is based on the technical foundation of the YZ250F: reverse-cylinder head engine, aluminum frame derived from the YZ450F, traction control, and launch control. It weighs 105 kg fully fueled. It is a non-homologated competition motorcycle, and its use on public roads is prohibited.
70th Anniversary Edition: an exclusive white and red livery
For its 70th anniversary, Yamaha dresses the YZ250F in a white and red livery that recalls the colors of its racing history. The difference lies in the style: beneath the bodywork, it shares the technical base of the 2026 YZ250F. This edition is therefore aimed at the rider who wants an up-to-date competition 250, with a bike that also stands out in the paddock.
250cc Reverse-Cylinder Head Engine
The 250cc 4-stroke single-cylinder engine is liquid-cooled, with double overhead cams and four valves. Its 77.0 x 53.6 mm dimensions make it a very oversquare engine, designed for high RPMs, with a compression ratio of 13.8:1. The reverse-cylinder head places the intake at the front and the exhaust at the rear, allowing for a direct intake duct. For 2026, Yamaha announces a new rear air management duct and a new ECU to gain performance at high RPMs. This is precisely where a 250 is won: at the top of the rev counter, where power must be extracted.
Air Intake: a filter that clogs less
Fresh air circulates between the tank, frame, seat, and side panels, allowing for slim bodywork. Before reaching the airbox, it passes through a vortex that separates some of the particles. The filter therefore clogs more slowly, which is crucial on dry and dusty tracks. Yamaha has also fitted a low-friction timing chain, designed to handle the increased power at high RPMs.
Aluminum Frame derived from the YZ450F
The YZ250F adopts the frame design of the YZ450F: a bilateral beam aluminum frame, semi-double cradle type. Yamaha has worked on the balance between rigidity and flexibility using specific engine mounts for good front-end feedback. The center of gravity is lowered. The geometry is based on a rake angle of 27°25', a trail of 123 mm, and a wheelbase of 1,480 mm: enough to keep the bike agile on corner entry without making it nervous in a straight line.
KYB Suspensions: 310 mm at the front, 295 mm at the rear
The KYB telescopic fork offers 310 mm of travel. For 2026, its settings have been optimized and it features manual compression adjustment, useful for adapting the fork between heats depending on track conditions. At the rear, the KYB Monocross linkage shock offers 295 mm of travel. It is mounted on a new linkage designed to improve traction on corner exit, where a 250 must exploit every horsepower to accelerate. The Power Tuner app contains suspension setting data to assist with adjustments.
Traction Control and Launch Control
Traction control offers two levels of assistance and an OFF position. It limits rear wheel spin when the ground lacks grip, allowing the rider to open the throttle earlier on corner exit. Launch control allows for setting a maximum RPM at the start: the rider can open the throttle wide when the gate drops, and the system limits the RPM, reducing the risk of spinning or wheelieing. On a 250, where the first corner is often decided by millimeters, it is a real asset.
Power Tuner App and ECU Locking
The Yamaha Power Tuner app allows engine behavior to be adjusted from a smartphone. Its latest version integrates a Quick Tuning function for faster settings. It also allows for locking the ECU: once locked, the bike will not restart until the password has been entered on the phone. As the bike has no physical key, this is a real theft protection in the paddock or on the trailer.
Ergonomics: flat seat and slim bodywork
The one-piece seat is flatter, facilitating weight transfers from front to back. The bodywork is compact, with slim side panels that allow the legs to grip the bike closely. Yamaha announces ergonomics adapted to riders of different sizes. The front fender improves airflow to the radiators for more uniform cooling. The seat height is 970 mm and the ground clearance is 350 mm: it is an adult-sized motocross bike.
105 kg Fully Fueled
The YZ250F weighs 105 kg fully fueled, with a 6.2-liter tank. Yamaha has lightened several components to improve the power-to-weight ratio and maneuverability without sacrificing reliability. This figure is measured with full fluids: it compares directly to other bikes announced in running order. The exhaust has been modified to comply with the latest FIM noise regulations while maintaining, according to Yamaha, the engine's character.
Braking and Transmission
Braking relies on a 270 mm disc at the front and a 240 mm disc at the rear, both hydraulically operated. The gearbox has 5 constant-mesh gears, with a multi-plate clutch in an oil bath and a final chain drive. The tires are tube-type: 80/100-21 at the front, 110/90-19 at the rear. The start is electric, allowing for a quick restart after a crash.
